In India, about 78% of the freshwater supplies are used for irrigation in agriculture despite the fact that only 47% of the cultivated area is irrigated! Yes, 78%! It’s just remaining 22% water supply that fulfills India’s other water needs! 1 k.g of rice grown in states like Punjab & Haryana needs about 5000 litres of water! 1 k.g of Sugar produced in Maharashtra needs about 2000 litres of water! And yeah… let’s make it clear that we haven’t made a typo. It’s 5K & 2k litres respectively! Sugarcane in Maharashtra which occupied only 4% of the state cropped area consumes about 66% of the irrigation water! Isn’t it water inequality? Do let us know what you think of it?
